Children are invited to explore the visual arts with unique activities provided by KidzArt, Howard county’s celebrated advocates of child creativity. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes.

On-site registration is suggested as space is limited. These activities are designed for all children 5 and over. Permanent, non-washable materials may be used. (Crayons and paper are always available for younger children.) Parents must accompany children. Located adjacent to the American City Building.

Surf’s Up on Lake Kittamaqundi  Lake Kittamaqundi may not feature huge waves, but we can create a day in the ocean anyway, with art.   We’ll show you have to draw a sunny summer beach, and then you can design the surfboards! 12:30 p.m. & 3:30 p.m.

Square by Square: Making a Mural Together  Learn the “art grid” method of recreating a small image onto a huge “canvas” as we create a beautiful, collaborative mural. This method makes tackling a “big empty space” easier, and can be applied immediately at the Chalk It Up sidewalk chalk contest here at LakeFest. 1:30 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.

Ready, Set, Grow!  Painted Pots and Seeds to Plant  Summer is a time for growing, and kids love to plant and care for their own little “gardens,” no matter how small! We think decorating the pot is as much fun as planting the seed, so let us help you design your own special pot, and have fun making it your own original masterpiece.  Every child will also receive the soil and seeds necessary to begin gardening today! 2:30 p.m.

Honoring an Endangered Species: The Giant Stick Insect  Often called "the rarest insect in the world," Australia's "Lord Howe Island Stick Insect" or Dryococelusaustralis has a story full of battles, shipwrecks, and miracles - like any good story! Join us in a fun drawing lesson while learning about how the Giant Stick Insect almost disappeared from the earth and is now making an amazing comeback. 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 12

Fun in the Sun: Drawing the KidzArt Way  For centuries, the “still life” drawing or painting has captured the imagination of artists and art students around the world.  Come join the ranks and complete your own masterpiece. Bring your grown-up, too, and even he or she will be able to make a drawing worthy of framing! 12:30 p.m. & 3:30 p.m.
