Columbia Festival of the Arts: Finale arrives with Barrage of sensations

The 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts wraps quite literally with a barrage of sound and action when the Canadian world music group Barrage performs next Saturday, June 27 at The Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Barrage is more than just a musical group that performs music while standing on stage. The nine-member ensemble supplements its playing with demanding physical showmanship, adding high kicks, dance poses and seemingly anything else that moves them while playing.

Their shows have been compared to such aggressively theatrical presentations as "Stomp" and "Riverdance" while being praised for its general musical excellence in countless newspapers and magazines.

Wilde Lake High girl-made-good set to appear at Columbia Festival of the Arts

Laura Lippman wants to make this clear -- Wilde Lake High School is not the model for the fictional Glendale High School.

"Glendale is soulless," she says of a major setting in her 2005 crime novel, "To the Power of Three."

Three girls were shot, two fatally, in that girls' bathroom at Glendale High, which Lippman sees as "kind of antithetical to Wilde Lake."

Laura Lippman will read and discuss her work at the 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts, in partnership with the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, Tuesday, June 23, 7-9:30 p.m. It will be held in the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall, Room 400, Howard Community College. Tickets are $30.

Ballet Hispanico is one of the 'hot' tickets at upcoming Columbia Festival of the Arts

Dance: Latin troupe turns up the heat in local debut
Ballet Hispanico is one of the 'hot' tickets at upcoming Columbia arts fest

June will be a bittersweet month for Tina Ramirez, director of Ballet Hispanico. First, she will at long last be able to introduce Howard County dance fans to her award-winning company at the 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts.

The local date includes a Latin dance workshop that is quickly filling up. On the down side, however, the engagement will also serve to cap a long and successful career as Ramirez heads into retirement.

"I'm thrilled to bring Ballet Hispanico to Columbia," exudes Ramirez by telephone from her New York City office. "We're coming straight from Los Angeles. After the festival, it's a summer break for us, and the rest is uncertain."

Asked if she's looking forward to retirement, she answers with a tinge of melancholy. "My whole life I've been in the arts -- and soon I will be a civilian."

One thing we can count on is a fantastic audience reception for the nearly 40-year-old troupe. In the past, Latin dance programs have proved to be hugely popular with crowds at the Columbia arts festivals.
